Marine plywood unlike the regular grade of plywood is used for constructing water resistant articles. A very important use of marine plywood is constructing boats. This veneered sheet of plywood is made from high quality wood that is selected on the basis of density, bending strength, surface finish characteristics and impact resistance. These properties of plywood are further intensified for quality by opting for a different construction pattern. There are no core gaps and a permanent waterproof chemical agent is used to bind them together. Wood for construction of marine veneered wood usually comes from tress like birch.
Usually plywood is constructed using thin layers of wood collected by scraping the bark of the trees. These layers are then glued together at 90 degree angles. The plywood is usually constructed after binding an odd number of layers together because warping, i.e., distortion, is lessened. However, marine ply is made differently. The glue that is used to bind the layers together is usually a water resistant phenol-formaldehyde agent. This is essentially what separates the marine ply from its other counterparts. The process of laying the sheets of wood is also different, which results in stronger sheets of ply.
Marine plywood is usually more expensive than its standard grade cousin. The prevalent market rates for marine ply are three times than that of standard grade plywood. This is because marine ply is specifically used in the construction of boats and in other items that need to be water resistant. It can also be used as an expensive substitute to exterior plywood wherein, it can be utilized to build roofs and walls in a house. However, that is extremely rare. Due to its specific usage and high quality properties, marine ply is sought after and is hardly ever substituted.
To make boats out of marine plywood is easy. Sourcing the material for the plywood is not. One needs to be extremely sure of the quality of wood in construction because it can make or break the project in hand. Thus, the wood that is usually used to make marine ply comes from hardwood trees like cedar, cypress, spruce, Australian eucalyptus, Douglas fir and longleaf yellow pine. The wood from these trees, after treatment, is guaranteed to withstand weather and high moisture surroundings. It is further intensified and made resistant with the help of the chemical agent that is used to bind it. Eventually, it emerges as the preferred choice for making articles that need to resist moisture.
Besides marine plywood, there are fire-retardant, moisture-resistant, sign-grade, pressure-treated, hardwood and softwood plywood. Each plywood type has a different process of construction and has its own place in an industry. It is better to use the specified product for a specific task rather than a cheap plywood substitute for the longevity of the project is put on stake. Cost cutting and financial limitations also induce some people to buy cheap plywood but making a compromise with the raw material is a mistake that can cost much more than money.
